The ClimateHound Pack: Sutler’s Spirit Co.
The word “sutler” entered English in the 1590s from the Dutch, as a term for entrepreneurs who followed and provisioned troops through the European wars that defined the bloody centuries to come. The same entrepreneurial energy made it to the New World, and it’s alive today in the award-winning gin crafted by Sutler’s Spirit Co. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
“Partnering with ClimateHound is a statement about our values as a company."
“Our brand has its roots in the first American Revolution, and we’re excited to be a part of the next one: transforming our collective relationship to the climate and the environment,” says founder Scot Sanborn, who named the distillery in honor of the sutlers who boosted the morale of troops with rebellious spirit (and spirits). “Partnering with ClimateHound is a statement about our values as a company and our belief that there’s no challenge too great for our customers and our country to tackle together.”
A graduate of the Citadel who’s had a long career in commercial photography, Sanborn brought together his passion for storytelling and spirits in founding Sutler’s, the first legal distillery in Winston-Salem for more than two hundred years. The company’s gin highlights citrus and botanicals like lavender and coriander, and it earned Sutler’s a Distillery of the Year award in 2021 from the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.
“Sutler’s Spirit Co. Gin has had a place on my shelf, both professionally and personally, for years,” says ClimateHound CEO Palmer Fox. “Their products and their values are a great example of how to honor the past while building on it to create something even better. I’m looking forward to the release of their first rum – another spirit deeply tied to American history – and to continuing our partnership in ensuring our country and our climate share an abundant future.”
